Lugansk State Medical University is a higher educational establishment in Luhansk (Ukraine). It was founded on May 6, 1956. The university has, as of 2012 more than 3000 students including students from over 60 countries. Graduates are eligible for the United states ECFMG certification and are also eligible for certification in Canada and many other countries after clearing medical licensing examination of these countries.
The leading fields of research at the university are the medical aspects of ecological problems in the heavily industrialized Donbas region, and the development and application of medical life support for casualties in man-made disasters.
The university publishes scientific journals and collections of articles.
Pediatrics faculty was founded in 1983 when the first pediatricians entered the university. Since that time more than 1500 pediatricians graduated from the faculty. The students of the faculty were always noted with discipline, diligence and serious attitude to studying. So it is not surprising that every year 10-25% of graduates get honours degrees. The graduates of the faculty successfully work in different regions of our country and abroad. Many of them hold leading positions in their establishments and have the highest qualification levels.
In 1980-s the equipment and scientific and teaching experience enabled the university to train students from abroad. And in 1983, according to the orders of Ministry of Education of Ukraine and Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine,
the training of foreign students started. Everything was founded from zero: proper hostels, the Russian Language Chair, changes in curriculums and syllabuses, training of lecturers and so on. In 1983 fifty five students from 16 countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East entered the faculty. In 1990-s representatives of 43 countries studied in the university. Now the geography of our students is the following: Asian countries 533, the Middle East and Africa 237, Latin America – 188. By 2006 the faculty had trained 1012 general practitioners, 64 residents and 15 candidates of medical sciences from more than 60 countries of the world.
The Medical course at the Lugansk State Medical University takes six years and leads to MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MBBS. The medical faculty is founded in 1956. In the under graduate program, during six years of study the students learn different subjects from fundamental subjects disciplines to special medical subjects.

The Lugansk State Medical University is known nationally for its many innovative teaching, clinical training and research programs. Our award-winning faculty members constantly strive for innovation and excellence in the classroom, the laboratory and the clinic. Because the class size is relatively small, our faculty members get to know each student. It is one thing to say the University has terrific people and programs and another to prove it.
Admission to the medical faculty takes place after conclusion of a contract. Foreigners learn in group of seven eight students along with local students. The second year students attend their clinical studies where they can gain experience in nursing the patients. Clinical subjects are taught beginning from the third year of study. Students can study any topic of interest and to raise their of knowledge in the departments. All six years of the program are important and all must be passed successfully before students are permitted to graduate.
The medium of instruction in the Medical faculty is English and Russian language. The Ministry of education and Ministry of Public health, Ukraine approved the curriculum of the medical faculty. Many countries accept the Lugansk State Medical University's degree.
The state final examinations on all the disciplines according to the syllabus are held within one system through 2 stages:
testing practical proficiency of final-year students (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the patient's bed) testing scientific/theoretical proficiency.
The successful students who will complete study of five years, then on graduation work for another year under probation in order to gain general registration. There is a wide range of specialization available in the public and private sectors, involving research, academic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other areas. Specialties include Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Public Health, General Practice and many others. Most doctors complete postgraduate training in their chosen specialty.
A tuition fee varies for each course in Lugansk State Medical University. It is the responsibility of the student to be familiar with the University regulations and financial matters. Lugansk State Medical University cannot make adjustments to any fees.

Foreign students who are entering the first course have to pay their full fees for the whole academic year. From the following academic years student can pay their tuition fees for each semester.
Lugansk State Medical University has a very good hostel system with fully furnished rooms, quite study environment and surrounded with recreation center. The University posses 5 hostels with the total area of 28431 sq.m for accommodation of 2220 students. All rooms in hostels are provided with internet facility. All rooms are equipped with bed, mattress, pillow, blanket, desk, chair, Elmira, heating, water system and suitable lighting for both study and relaxation. In the hostel each room is attached with kitchen is provided for students to cook food to their own taste. Students will need to supply their own kitchen utensils. Meals may be bought from various food outlets. All the rooms are provided with heaters. Hostel fees depend upon the size of the dwelling space. This accommodation is available all the year round and for the whole period of training. But foreign students prefer rented flat/accommodation.
