About West Visayas State University

West Visayas State University (WVSU, referred to colloquially by locals as West; Filipino: Pamantasang Pampamahalaan ng Kanluraning Visayas[3]) is a public normal research university located in La Paz, Iloilo City, Western Visayas region of the Philippines.

It was established in 1924 as Iloilo Normal School under the tutelage of the Thomasites but dates back to its founding in 1902 as a part of the Philippine normal school system with Iloilo National High School established by the American colonial government. It later became West Visayas State College in 1965 and acquired its university status becoming West Visayas State University in 1986.

The The West Visayas State Universityis one of the accredited Philippine Universities of the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific and one of the most prominent institutions in the Philippines in the field of Teacher Education, Nursing, and Medicine.

The West Visayas State University (WVSU) system is composed of the main campus, six external campuses (which are distinct from the main campus), and the WVSU Medical Center. The La Paz (main campus) is organized with an integrated laboratory school and ten degree-granting tertiary schools and colleges.

In the collegiate level studies, the academic programs the university offers include Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Biology, Business Management, Cooperatives Management, Forestry, Hospitality Management, Information, and Communications Technology, Mass Communication, Medicine, Nursing, Operations Management, Political Science, Public Administration, Physical Education, Teacher Education, and Tourism. The Law program of the university under the newly established College of Law was opened in August 2020.

The 2,000-hectare Mari-it Wildlife and Conservation Park which is managed as part of the 3,000 hectares WVSU College of Agriculture and Forestry campus in Lambunao, Iloilo, is the largest hornbill breeding facility in the world.

The Philippine Commission on Higher Education has also designated the university through its main campus as National Center of Excellence in Teacher Education and National Center of Development in Nursing while the Lambunao Campus as National Centers of Development in the programs of Agriculture and Forestry.

West Visayas State University (WVSU) was founded on June 16, 1902, as an adjunct unit with the Iloilo National High School of the Philippine normal school system established under the American regime.

It was one of the five tributary schools created to address the need to train Filipino teachers under the tutelage of the Thomasites. In 1916, it was a secondary school (an adjunct with the Iloilo High School) complete with elementary and training departments.

In 1924, with the completion of its main building (now Quezon Hall) and laboratory school building, Iloilo Normal Scool was established as a distinct educational and independent institution. It was also when a secondary normal school program, which eventually became a four-year normal college course, was established.

In 1954, the Bachelor of Science in Education major in Elementary Education was offered, pioneering teacher-training institution in Western Visayas. It was named a Center of Excellence (1994) by the late Sen. Blas P. Ople and Center of Excellence for Teacher Education (1995)[8] by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).The enactment of the Higher Education Modernization Act (1997)brought more developments in the University.

In 2000, four CHED-supervised schools in Calinog, Janiuay, Lambunao, and Pototan were integrated into the WVSU System. The University Distance Education program through the Diploma in Teaching (DIT) course began in Summer 2003. By 2005, the Local Government Unit of Himamaylan in Negros Occidental entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with WVSU for the establishment of the The West Visayas State University Himamaylan City Extension in 2006 which was later elevated to external campus from being an extension campus.

Meanwhile, two new degree-granting units were also opened in the University: the Institute of Information and Communications Technology (IICT) in 2002 and the Institute of Management (IM) in 2006 which later became the College of Business and Management (2010).

In 2007, the West Visayas State University administrators, scholars, and histories collectively agreed to change the institution’s founding especially on its logo from 1924 to 1902, the year WVSU was founded as a tributary unit of the Philippine Normal School System. [a] It was in the said year also (2007), that the university celebrated its centennial.

A national historical marker was installed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines on the main campuss Quezon Hall.

In February 2008, the university hosted an international research conference in Iloilo City, in conjunction with its year-long centennial celebration. In July 2020, the West Visayas State University College of Law was established, the first public law school in Western Visayas.

About Iloilo, Philippines

Iloilo Is a 1st class highly urbanized city on Panay Island in Western Visayas (Region VII), Philippines. It is the capital city of the province of Iloilo where it is geographically situated but, in terms of government and administration, it is politically independent.

Founded in 1566 when the Spaniards established a settlement area between the towns of Oton and the city’s present district of La Villa Rica de Arevalo (Villa de Arevalo), Iloilo City is the second Spanish colonial center after Cebu in the Philippine islands. It is one of the Royal Spanish Cities in the Philippines in Spanish Asia along with Naga and Manila.

An honorific royal title, “La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad” (“The Most Loyal and Noble City”) was given by Queen Regent of Spain, Maria Christina, through the city’s loyalty to the Spanish crown during the Philippine revolution, the second city to have such byname in the country after the City of Manila in the Spanish colonial era the Philippines.

A second to the primate city of Manila at the turn of the 20th century in the economy, foreign and local commercial establishments line the whole stretch of Calle Real (Iloilo’s Escolta and old business district), an agricultural experimental station established at La Paz in 1888, a school of arts and trades which opened in 1891, and a telephone network system operating in the metropolis in 1894.

Iloilo is the last capital of the Spanish Empire in Asia and the Pacific before the Philippines was ceded to the United States in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris. The city is the regional hub of education, culinary, religion, healthcare, tourism, culture, industry, and economy in Western Visayas.

A thriving academic center, Iloilo City is a melting pot that draws foreign and local students from various parts of the country and abroad. Central Philippine University (CPU), a university founded by American Protestants through a grant of John D.

Rockefeller as the first Baptist and second American institution of higher learning in Asia, attracts 14,000 enrolees from different parts of the Philippines and twenty-seven foreign countries annually, the largest in the Western Visayan region. CPU is also the first institution in the said region to be ranked as one of the top and best Asian and global universities by Quacquarelli Symonds, one of the big two world university ranking agencies after Times Higher Education.

As one of the culinary capitals of the Philippine Islands, Iloilo is famous for Pancit Molo, La Paz Batchoy, Laswa, and Kansi. Several regional national government offices, financial institutions, and government-owned and controlled corporations held offices in the city. The Dinagyang Festival, held every January, and Fiesta de Candelabras (Fiesta de Jaro), one of the largest Philippine Marian festivals, are two of the known cultural and religious festivals the city is flocked and renowned for in the country.

Before you begin:

  • Take a photo or scan your Senior High School report card(for Undergraduate Applicant) and Transcript of Records (for Graduate School applicant). For Senior High School graduates, the grades as of the first semester should be in the card. Have the image file ready for uploading later.

  • Click the Create Account button to continue.
  • Read the Data Privacy Consent and click the tick box that applies to you. Click the Agree and Continue button to proceed with your application.
  • The system will provide you the temporary log-in credentials. This will allow you to log-in anytime and continue your application. The system will also automatically send the temporary log-in credentials to your registered email address.
