The original campus was established by the Parliament Act in 1958 in the suburb of Clayton, where the university was given an expansive 100 hectares of open land. The 100 hectares of land consisted of farmland and contained the epileptic colony of the former Talbot. The original Vice-House Chancellor's - now the University House - was designed by the O'Shea family.
The university grew steadily in size and student numbers from its first intake of 357 students at Clayton on 13 March 1961, so that, since its founding, it had enrolled more than 21,000 students by 1967.
