The university was named after the prominent Australian general SirJohn Monash. This was the first time in Australia that a university had been named after a person, rather than a city or state.

The Clayton campus covers an area over 1.1 km2 and is the largest of the Monash campuses. Clayton is the flagship campus for Monash, demanding higher ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) scores than all the other campuses, with the exception of Parkville. Clayton is home to the faculties of Arts, Business & Economics, Education, Engineering, IT, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Science. This is comparable to Victorian high school leavers' more than 15,000 first choices. In Victoria, more of the top 5 percent of high school graduates chose Monash than any other college. Nearly half of the top 5% of high school leavers in 2010 decided to attend Monash, the highest 5% the highest of any Victorian university by quite some margin. In 2009, among students with a "perfect" ENTERscore of 99.95 (i.e. students in the top 0.05% of high school applicants), 63 made an application for Monash.

Students Life:

Monash had over 63,000 learners across its campuses in 2011. Of these, approximately 46,000 are undergraduate students, 12,500 are graduate or postgraduate students, and 4,500 are studying for higher degrees.

Around 65% of students at Monash have national citizenship (i.e. they are citizens of the country in which their main campus is located). Foreign students make up about 39 percent. International students come from more than 100 countries and speak nearly 90 different languages. As their mother tongue, over 50 percent of Monash students have a language other than English.

Of the 13,200 biographies, 1100 Monash graduates (or 8.33 percent of the total biographical listings) are listed. The original campus was established by the Parliament Act in 1958 in the suburb of Clayton, where the university was given an expansive 100 hectares of open land. The 100 hectares of land consisted of farmland and contained the epileptic colony of the former Talbot. The original Vice-House Chancellor's - now the University House - was designed by the O'Shea family.

The university grew steadily in size and student numbers from its first intake of 357 students at Clayton on 13 March 1961, so that, since its founding, it had enrolled more than 21,000 students by 1967. It offered undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas in engineering, medicine, technology, arts, economics, politics, education, and law in its early years. Under the Colombo Programmed, it was a major provider of international student locations, which saw the first Asian students joining the Australian education system.

In its early years of teaching, research and administration, Monash did not have conventional methods, and as such, without signals, Monash was able to follow modern techniques. A modern administrative structure was established; the first research centers and scholarships dedicated to Indigenous Australians in Australia were set up.

Course Description

  • The emphasis of the course will be on the fundamentals of medicine, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and neuroscience, as well as rigorous clinical training in all fields, including medicine, surgery, women's and children's health, mental health, primary health and rural health.
  • A five-year study program with direct entry from school is the Monash Undergraduate Medical Course.
  • The course offers, beginning in the first semester of the course, a constantly increasing degree of medical experience. Basic medical sciences are taught in the early years in the sense of their importance to patient care.
