About De La Salle University

De La Salle University was established in 1911 by the Catholic teaching congregation Brothers of the Christian Schools. The congregation was founded in 1680 as a community of consecrated laymen by St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle to conduct, “together and by association,” schools that he established first in the northern French city of Rheims, to touch the hearts particularly of poor children, and to inspire them with the Christian spirit.

De La Salle University vision of teachers who “teach minds, touch hearts, and transform lives” led him to document the best practices that would guide the Brothers in their conduct of schools, to introduce pedagogy that could be characterized as distinctly modern, and in 1685, to put up the first-ever normal school.

De La Salle University was canonized on May 24, 1900, and in recognition of the educational innovations he pioneered that are carried on by the congregation he had founded, he was declared as the Patron Saint of Teachers by Pope Pius XII on May 15, 1950.

In 1901, three years after Spain ceded control of the Philippines to the United States, the Americans established a new public education system using English as the medium of instruction.

The Catholic educational institutions in the country at that time, however, continued using Spanish as their medium, and this practice raised concerns that the Catholic children would lose out in the quest for leadership roles under the American administration. Meanwhile, the Brothers had by then established their presence in 35 countries, including the United States.

Thus, the American Archbishop of Manila, Jeremiah Harty, turned to the Brothers to pave the way for the introduction of English-based quality Catholic education in the country. After some hesitation, because the endeavor demanded teaching the sons of the economic elite rather than the poor, the Brothers eventually relented, conceding that “upper-class children also needed good moral and spiritual training.” On June 16, 1911, nine brothers from Europe and the United States opened in the district of Paco, just outside the walls of the old city of Manila, the first La Salle school in the Philippines.

Initially, the De La Salle Brothers were very hesitant in establishing a De La Salle school in the country because the Americans insisted that the first De La Salle school should only educate the rich children of the Filipino ruling elite. The Americans ordered the Christian Brothers to Americanize future Filipino leaders through their Catholic Lasallian education.

The American request had put the De La Salle Brothers in a dilemma because it ran contrary to the original teachings and charism of Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers whose religious vocation was to provide tuition-free, quality Christian values-based education.

The De La Salle Brothers eventually relented, conceding that the “upper-class children also needed good moral and spiritual training." Saint La Salle's mission was to empower the last, the least, and the lost among the poorest children in the world to free them from the shackles of ignorance that creates poverty. Then they started da la salle university in manila which is the capital of the Philippines.

Manila, officially the City of Manila, is the capital of the Philippines and a highly urbanized city. It is the most densely populated city proper in the world as of 2019. It was the first chartered city by the Philippine Commission Act 183 on July 31, 1901, and gained autonomy with the passage of Republic Act No. 409 or the "Revised Charter of the City of Manila" on June 18, 1949.

Manila, alongside Mexico City and Madrid, was considered the world's original set of global cities due to its commercial networks being the first to traverse the Pacific Ocean, thus connecting Asia with the Spanish Americas, marking the first time in world history when an uninterrupted chain of trade routes circled the planet. Manila is also the second most natural disaster-afflicted capital city in the world next to Tokyo, yet it is simultaneously among the most populous and fastest-growing cities in Southeast Asia.

The de la salle medical university Institute has three major services: medical and health sciences education, health care through De La Salle University Medical Center, and the De La Salle Angelo King Medical Research Center.

The De La Salle university medical center is a medical school and allied health institution established in 1979 and is a constituent of De La Salle Philippines. The de la salle university medical center consists of three service divisions: the academic division - consisting of the colleges and a senior high school, its teaching hospital - De La Salle University Medical Center, and a research facility - Angelo King Medical Research Center. Located in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, it sits only 3 kilometers from De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, a separate De La Salle campus where it is often mistaken as part of due to its proximity.

The De La Salle University Medical center and Health Sciences Institute was started by a group of doctors from the College of Medicine of the University of the Philippines and the Philippine General Hospital who, in 1976, decided to establish a medical school to support the need for a well-trained staff for the newly inaugurated Medical Center Manila. Following the national government's policy of dispersing educational facilities outside the capital city and encouraging the establishment of medical schools in various regions of the country, they decided to establish a medical school in Dasmariñas City, Cavite.

Originally named Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine, the school opened in 1979 under the management of the University Physician’s Foundation, Inc. with the Jose P. Rizal National Medical Research Center as its initial teaching hospital. Then on July 31, 1982, the Foundation inaugurated a 4-story 180-bed teaching hospital, the de la salle University Medical Center.

In June 1987, ownership and management were acquired by the De La Salle University Inc. In 1992, the college was renamed the De La Salle University College of Medicine and the hospital, the De La Salle University Medical Center. In June 1994, the management of the College of Physical Therapy which was then part of DLSU-Aguinaldo (now DLSU-D) was turned over to the De La Salle University College of Medicine.

By June 1995, the de la salle university medical center consisting of the College of Medicine, de la salle University Medical Center, College of Physical Therapy, and Research Services was named De La Salle University medical center – Health Sciences Campus or DLSU-HSC under the ownership and administration of the St. Bro. Miguel Febres Cordero Medical Education Foundation.

The De La Salle University Medical Center acts as the teaching hospital of DLSMHSI. Owned by the De La Salle Brothers Philippines and administered by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, De La Salle University medical center offers a tertiary level of medical care. The offices of the clinical departments and the full-time clinical faculty members are in the de la Salle university medical center.

Since 1995, the expansion program has increased the de la salle university medical center hospital's bed capacity to a total of 300 beds. The De La Salle University Medical Center includes much state-of-the-art medical equipment. The de la salle university medical center hospital also leads other private hospitals in Cavite in setting up medical wards intended for the poor enrolled in the Cavite Governor's health reform program, Dignidad at Kalidad (DK).
