Flinders University

Established in 1966, the Flinders University is a public university in Adelaide, Australia. The university is named after Matthew Flinders, a navigator who explored the South Australian coastline in the early 19th century. Other than the main campus in Adelaide, the university also operates external teaching facilities in regional South Australia, south-west Victoria, and the Northern Territory.

The university offers more than 160 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It comprises of 6 colleges: College of Business, Government and Law; College of Education, Psychology and Social Work; College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; College of Medicine and Public Health; College of Nursing and Health Sciences; and College of Science and Engineering.

The total student population at the university is more than 25,000 students of which over 16,000 are enrolled in the undergraduate courses. The student to faculty ratio at the Flinders University is 22:1.

Flinders is a member of the International Network of Universities and Innovative Research Universities Australia. Flinders University offers offshore courses in collaboration with partner institutions in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. These courses are delivered offshore by academic staff from Flinders in association with the partner institution.

Flinders University works with Study Group to provide introductory academic, Foundation and Diploma programs. The Flinders ISC Foundation program provides comprehensive academic preparation that is specifically designed for international students. The Diploma is an advanced program of academic preparation that is designed for both international and domestic students. Also known as the International Year One, the Diploma is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. It will fully prepare the student for joining the second year of a business, commerce or engineering degree at Flinders University.

Postgraduate study

For example, those who enroll in a Masters and do not complete it – but do complete the nested Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma – may exit with that qualification.

Flinders University Undergraduate Admissions

Flinders University offers various undergraduate courses such as Business Administration, Education, Science, Accounting, etc. The students applying for such programs are encouraged, as well as required, to take college prep courses during their high school.

Admission Requirement: The following requirements must be fulfilled for admission to undergraduate programs:

  • Completion of secondary education in Australia with ATAR
  • Official high school transcripts
  • Minimum entry requirement equivalent to of 65
  • Prerequisite subjects or knowledge in a particular subject may be required.

ADVANTAGES:

Housing

Flinders is the only South Australian University with on-campus accommodation in the Adelaide metropolitan area. There are two options:

  • University Hall (catered)
  • Deirdre Jordan Village (self-catered).

For off-campus accommodation, Flinders Housing runs a free, up-to-date accommodation service which lists private accommodation available on the rental market.

Media

Empire Times was published by the Students' Association of Flinders University (SAFU) from 1969 to 2006. The founder and first editor of the newspaper was Martin Fabinyi, and the newspaper was originally printed in the back of his house by fellow student Rod Boswell. Empire Times had a history of controversial humor and anti-establishment discussion. Notable former editors and contributors included Martin Armiger and Greig (HG Nelson) Pickhaver, Steph Key and Kate Ellis. Empire Times ceased publication in 2006 as a result of voluntary student unionism, but resumed in 2013.

Sports

Flinders University has many sports teams that compete in social and competitive competitions.
Flinders University currently have 22 affiliated sporting clubs, these clubs range from social-based to highly competitive sporting clubs, including: Aikido, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Fit, Football, Hockey, Kendo, Korfball, Lacrosse, Men's Soccer, Muay Thai, Netball, Squash, Ultimate Frisbee, Underwater, Volleyball, Wing Chun and Women's Soccer.
Additionally, Flinders University students have the capacity to go away to annual university games events and compete in a range of sports while representing the University.
