In view of a lack of Pediatricians in the area and a high infant mortality rate in the region, the institute's main objective was to train highly qualified doctors and Pediatricians. A change in name to Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute took place in 1989 by the Uzbek Ministry of Health. Pediatrics has been a major focus of the university for many years.
